Astell & Kerr AK Jr. Digital Audio Player - A Smash Hit of a Hi-Res DAP
With the right headphones listening to music via this is simply a different experience. Everything from the build quality of the device to the sound coming through is memorable. I know there are more expensive Digital Audio Players out there but this is the absolute peak of what I’d pay – but it’s worth it.
The Top Questions for the Astell & Kern AK Jr. Digital Audio Player:
Can I use my iTunes library with this device?
Yes. The AK Jr. can play all compressed music formats but if you want to hear it’s full potential play Hi-Res audio of around 24 bits / 96 KHz via high grade headphones. You can easily connect to any PC or Mac and transfer audio, it doesn’t sync like an iPod but you just need to drag and drop the files you want onto either a micro-SD card or directly onto the device.
Is this better than the FiiO X3-II for making playlists?
Sadly no. The only method we’ve found is to add songs one at a time while they are playing. Yet this is the only place where the AK Jr. isn’t an improvement over the FiiO X3-II though. The AK Jr. has a better build quality, a more responsive UI and is an improvement on sound quality when using high quality headphones.
Can you stream music to a Bluetooth speaker with this?
Yes you can. We’ve tried it and don’t recommend buying it for that purpose. The loss of sound quality via a Bluetooth speaker makes it sound weaker than a $50 FiiO M3.
Where can I find a hands on review for the AK Jr.?
Is this Astell & Kern AK Jr. on sale at Amazon.com?
Right now you can buy the Astell & Kern AK Jr. on Amazon.
Does this Digital Audio Player support gapless playback?
Yes, it supports gapless playback for 24-bit files.
Does this DAP have an on-board EQ?
Yes it does. There are two. One which is a Professional EQ that is locked but sounds amazing. The other is a 5-band Manual EQ which you can modify freely.
Do you need any special cables to use this with a standard headphone jack?
No. This like all Digital Audio Players use a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, just like an iPhone. Unfortunately unless you’re using good quality headphones and Hi-Res audio files it will be hard to hear how good this device is.
Do you need a portable headphone amplifier?
No, a dedicated amp is not needed with this device. The AK Jr. puts out a lot of power for a mobile device. The only reason to use an amplifier would be if you planned to use a 300 ohm or higher set of headphones?
Can you use the USB port in your car to listen to the audio?
Yes, you can. However it is recommended for optimum sound that your AUX port is used.
Where can I find an unboxing video for this Digital Audio Player?
How much storage space comes with this device?
The AK Jr. has 64 GB of built in storage. It also has a micro-SD card slot to add more storage.
What size mirco-SD cards will work with this?
We’re using a 64 GB micro-SD card but have read it can accept any size, up to 200 GB. However make sure you buy a reputable brand of micro-SD card, something like SanDisk if you want it to definitely be compatible. Some less reputable, and cheaper brands have been known to have compatibility issues regardless of size.
