Sony Walkman NWZX2 Hi-Res Music Player - For those who want to feel the music, not just hear it

The Astell & Kern Jr. is the best priced consumer Hi-Res portable audio player I’ve used, that’s not changed. Its just unfair to put this Sony Walkman in the same category. Firstly this is not for portable use. I don’t mean that in a negative like with the Pono Portable. This Sony Walkman NWZX2 has other-worldly battery life, the full suite of Android apps and connectivity to WiFi and Bluetooth. What you don’t have while out and about is the silence to hear the energy, the detail and perfection this gives. It’s simply amazing!

The Top Questions for the Sony Walkman NWZX2 Music Player:

What can it do that warrants such a high price?

It’s a good question. On the surface, nothing. It plays Hi-Res audio and there are lots of other Digital Audio Players that do that at a fraction of the price. It’s not until you connect it and listen. It’s like the jump between SD and HD TV but with audio. With the NWZX2 you just feel the music more than you do with other Hi-Res Digital Audio Players. Sony have created something exceptional in this device, you can feel the quality and that always costs more. That doesn’t mean it’s right for you and it’s definitely targeting the audiophile.

Does it work with iTunes?

You can move the files from your iTunes collection to the Sony Walkman easily. However, it won’t Sync like an Apple device would. The Walkman would work more like a removable drive, this means when you connect you’ll need to drag and drop files into the storage. You could even create folder structures for your music and the Sony Walkman will use them as playlists.

All of the music files on Amazon and Apple are compressed files. I now have to buy uncompressed files?

Not at all. Hi-Res Digital Audio Players upscale compressed files and makes them sound better, but not as good as native Hi-Res audio obviously. So if you want to hear the Sony Walkman NWZX2 perform to its maximum (trust me, you do want that) then get some lossless music files and sit back. If you’re not interested in Hi-Res music then this Digital Audio Player is not for you.

Yes. You’ll get notifications as and when they are available if connected to WiFi.

Can I use this like an iPod for social media and games?

Yes. However we don’t recommend buying this Digital Audio Player for social media, games or anything other than Hi-Res audio. There are cheaper options that do these things. Additionally, the Android interface is sometimes sluggish, with the occasional delay between tapping a button and interaction. We would actually suggest disabling many of the apps which run automatically with the device in order to improve response time and battery life.

Is there a program that’s compatible for syncing music to this Digital Audio Player?

Sony provide their Media Go software which allows for syncing. However it’s easy and responsive to just drag and drop folders and files to the device.

How long does it take to charge, and how long does the battery last once charged?

Once burned in the device will take roughly 4 hours to fully charge. This will give between 32 and 40 hours of play time if just being used for audio, and secondary apps are disabled. The more apps you use and leave in use while listening to audio the quicker the battery will deplete.
